Summer Camps

Children can have an adventure in the arts this summer at Soo Theatre Arts Resource Studios (STARS)**. Plans are underway for two elementary arts exploration camps—a mix of music, dance, acting and art.

For middle school and high school students STARS is planning a musical theatre camp. These programs will be one- or two-week day camps, and enrollment is limited. Registration begins May 1. Call STARS at 632-1930, email stars@lighthouse.net, or stop by for more information. Information will also be posted on our website, www.sootheatreproject.org.

Productions

A number of benefit productions are being planned by Soo Theatre Project this summer.

These productions will begin on May 19 and 20 with a Broadway Revue, featuring STARS dance, theatre and voice students. Eric Shaw and Karen Hughes will appear in concert on June 17.  A production of Hansel and Gretel is already being rehearsed, and will be presented in July. Other performances are in the planning stages.

Summer Classes, Lessons, Workshops

Some STARS teachers will continue with music and dance classes and private lessons through the summer. Workshops on a number of topics are also being scheduled.

Lighting and Sound Equipment Needed

Soo Theatre Project needs money for basic lighting and sound equipment, and for operating the building while we look for funding to proceed with renovations. Income from the summer performances will help with these expenses.

Happenings in the Soo Theatre Complex

Demolition has started upstairs in the former apartments. Students from the Skill Center’s Construction Technology class and workers from the Chippewa County Sheriff Department’s Community Service program, along with Soo Theatre Project volunteers, have started to make the upstairs space available for construction of new studios and office space for STARS and the Soo Theatre Project. In just a few months the STARS program has outgrown the space on the ground floor!

Peter’s Place

Peter’s Place (named after Peter Gianakura, long-time proprietor of the American Café), will soon have a counter with coffee, tea, cold drinks and a few snacks available. For the time being, access by the public will be limited to special events, as the “café” is both office and waiting area for STARS until more space in the building becomes usable.
